FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about IT services, data security and everyday technology.

01What is hosting?

Hosting provides space and resources for website files, databases and email on an internet-connected server. You do not need to buy your own physical server. Choose a plan based on the number of websites, disk space and other resources you need.

02What is colocation?

Colocation means placing your own physical server in a service provider’s data centre. The facility supplies space, power, cooling and network connectivity. Server administration and additional services are agreed separately.

03What is domain registration?

Domain registration gives you the right to use a chosen internet address, such as company.lv, for a set period. The domain must be renewed before it expires. Registration alone does not include hosting or website development; these services must be arranged separately.

04Why is an IT audit needed and what does it provide?

An IT audit assesses the condition of your computers, servers, network, software and security measures. It identifies risks and weaknesses, helps prioritise improvements and supports IT budget planning. The scope is tailored to your business needs.

05What is the internet and what is it used for?

The internet is a worldwide network of interconnected computer networks. It enables websites, email, video calls, cloud services and data exchange. For businesses, it supports communication with clients and colleagues and access to remote work systems.

06Why does a business need a server?

A server provides shared services such as file storage, databases, business applications and user access management. It can be located in your office, in a data centre or in the cloud as a virtual server. Not every business needs its own physical server; the right solution depends on how you work.

07Why does a business need IT consulting?

IT consulting helps you choose suitable hardware, software and infrastructure, plan growth and assess security risks. Expert advice helps avoid incompatible solutions and unnecessary costs, supporting informed decisions.

08Why should you back up your data?

Backups let you recover data after accidental deletion, equipment failure or a cyber incident. Back up regularly, keep copies separate from the primary system and test recovery. File synchronisation or disk mirroring alone is not a substitute for backups.

09Why monitor system performance?

Monitoring tracks service availability and resources such as disk space, load and errors. Alerts help detect problems early and enable a faster response. The monitoring scope and actions after an alert must be agreed; monitoring alone does not prevent every failure.

10Why does a data centre need double or triple redundancy in its connections?

Independent backup internet connections and redundant power systems reduce the impact of a single failure. If one connection or component fails, a backup can take over. Redundancy reduces downtime risk but does not guarantee that all disruption will be avoided.

11What is traffic?

Traffic is the data transferred over a network, both received and sent. Its volume is usually measured in megabytes or gigabytes over a given period. Data volume differs from connection speed, which is usually expressed in megabits or gigabits per second.

12What is an IP address?

An IP address identifies a device or network interface for communication and data routing. There are IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, as well as public and private addresses. Several devices or websites can share a public IP address.

13What are DNS servers and why are they needed?

DNS servers help locate services using a domain name such as itcg.lv. DNS records specify website addresses, email servers and other domain information. After records change, cached copies can delay when the updates become visible.

14How can I move my website to you from another provider?

Contact us with your website address and the platform it uses. Together, we will clarify the resources, access and migration scope required. Migration usually includes copying files and the database, testing in the new environment and updating DNS records. Email migration is agreed separately. Keep the existing service until checks are complete; do not send passwords in the contact form.

15How secure are your servers?

Our data centres use restricted physical access, redundant power, climate control and network protection. The security of each service also depends on updates, access permissions and backups. Administration, monitoring and backup arrangements are specified in the proposal; no system is completely protected against every risk.
